Open Source Intelligence: Tradecraft & Tools – 12 March

February 25th, 2010

There has never been anything in the history of humankind that comes close to the ability of the Internet to reach to almost every part of the globe.  But, as with all new technologies, it comes at a cost—many costs, in fact.

The first Google index in 1998 captured 26 million pages, and by 2000 the Google index reached the one billion mark. In 2009 the Google Index hit a milestone: 1 trillion (as in 1,000,000,000,000) unique URLs on the web at once!

It has been argued that we pay for the benefits of the Internet less in terms of money and more in terms of the currencies of our age: time, energy, and privacy.

With all that information out there, the trick is knowing what you are looking for and where to find it.  This workshop has been designed specifically for Law Enforcement and Intelligence Practitioners to provide a better understanding of the tools and techniques of Open Source Research.

Speaker:      Shannon Armstrong
Date:             Friday 12 March, 2010
Venue:         ECU Mt Lawley Campus, Building 17  Room 203
Time:            2.00pm – 5.30pm

secAU Special Interest Group Seminar: VoIP something old something new

February 5th, 2010

Over 30 years ago the “holy grail of hackers was the compromise and utilisation of PABX systems to enable free phone calls for voice and of course data at that stage. In response to this phenomenon PABX systems became increasingly secure and less able to be compromised. Now some 30 years on we now have home ADSL accounts with VoIP devices used for telephony, we appear to have learned little. There has been an attendant increase in network scanning activity that looks for available or VoIP systems. This talk will look at some of the tools and techniques being used by attackers to compromise these systems. The talk will also explore motivations for the attacks.

Speaker: Professor Craig Valli
Date: Thursday 11 February 2010
Time: 5.30 – 6.30pm
Venue: ECU Mt Lawley Campus, Building 17 Room 203

secau speaks – Boobs, Breaches and Backdoor Blunders – Tuesday 18th August

August 5th, 2009

E-health and the national electronic medical record is on our doorstep. Your General Practitioner is the cornerstone to its success. Who will have access to your records? Do you want your record shared? Would you like to have control over their distribution? Before consideration of such questions, perhaps your first question should ask, are they safe? Medical Practices are more vulnerable to security breaches than other organisations. They are small business entities who are mainly unaware of the dangers and are similarly ill equipped to manage their security effectively. There is a lack of security awareness and expertise, which is further complicated by an inherent culture of trust. Medical practices raise complex issues of a more socio-technical nature in information security. It is the security profession’s responsibility to address these issues. These socio-technical issues may by the undoing of medical practice and e-health in Australia unless a holistic governance.
